Queen Connie from Leicester, Vermont

Queen Connie, one of Vermont’s most unforgettable roadside landmarks. If you’ve ever driven U.S. Route 7 through Leicester, Vermont, you may have done a double take when you saw a 19-foot-tall concrete gorilla holding a Volkswagen Beetle over her head. That larger-than-life roadside icon is Queen Connie.

Built in 1987 by sculptor T.J. Neil, Queen Connie was commissioned by Joan Cameron O’Neil, owner of Pioneer Auto Sales. Joan was a true Vermont pioneer herself, she opened Pioneer Auto Sales in 1969, becoming the first female-owned automobile dealership in Vermont.

The sculpture is constructed from concrete and reinforced steel, with the Smithsonian's American Art Inventories documenting it as a 19-foot sculpture dedicated in July 1987. The actual Volkswagen incorporated into the sculpture is listed as a 1986 Volkswagen.

The name “Queen Connie” was selected through a contest for local schoolchildren. The winning child even received a bright-red bicycle for coming up with the name.

Decades later, Connie remains one of those wonderfully strange roadside attractions that makes a road trip memorable and a perfect example of the kind of “only in Vermont” Americana that deserves to be celebrated.
